Religious Studies is an important subject in any school as its aim is to encourage students to explore the reasons why people behave the way they do. We look at our own beliefs, our society’s ideals and the beliefs of other societies in the hope that this will encourage greater understanding and tolerance.
In Year 7 and 8 all students have one hour per week teaching time. We explore concepts/ideas such as community, how we decide a thing is true, justice, rules and then place them in a context/situation such as the life of Gandhi to see how the idea can be applied.
In Year 9 the students explore the concepts of relationships and the religious beliefs surrounding this topic. Students will look at the topic of crime and punishment, especially the aims of punishment.
An AQA exam board GCSE is offered at Key Stage 4 over 2 or 3 years which explores the Philosophy of Religion (Does God Exist and Can It Be Proved) along side morals and ethical dilemmas such as abortion and euthanasia. This is a 100% examination course where two papers are taken at the end of the course.
