information communication technology
Portchester Community School has been quick to adopt the new govenment-led strategy in moving away from the ICT curriculum which has held sway for at least twenty years. We feel that ICT had moved too far towards office-based skills and had lost sight of the needs of young people in the modern world.
Students in Years 7 and 8 now follow a computer science syllabus which develops their technical understanding of digital equipment and also allows them to develop the coding skills which will allow them to be in a position to develop their own ideas in the field of programming. Useful ICT skills such as the use of spreadsheets and data files will remain part of the syllabus.
The department has invested heavily in tablet technology this year, and has also acquired a range of robotic equipment.
Students in Years 7 and 8 will also be examining the advantages, disadvantages and potential pitfalls of social media and internet usage.
Computer Science GCSE is a popular option and takes the above topics up to a much higher level.
